Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was young the carnival barker father died and left her mother with no choice but to be a cleaning girl and waitress to provide for the family. Ruth was raised in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts in which she went to the school. Her school was closed in two years, to go into acting. The route she took wasn't without its challenges. While in New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines. the theatre work that she longed for was not available. As a hat check girl in a nightclub, she quit and returned to Boston. She worked as an usherette during the early morning hours and also performed at the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first ever permanent acting job. In addition, she was a drama student and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
